Melis’s position in contemporary glass was very high in the 1980s, and he was recognized among the top 50 glass artists in the world by the World Glass Now ‘82 competition in Japan.
Stanislav Melis was born in Slovakia (a part of the Czechoslovakian Federation).
He served an apprenticeship at the glass industry training school in Lednické Rovné (Central Slovakia) and training in a specialized school of glassmaking in Nov Bor.
In 1968 Meli emigrated to Australia. Goran Warf recommended Stanislav Melis to the Australian government because of his extraoridnary skills, and his offer was accepted in 1976.
Melis undertook the job in the Jam Factory, removed to Adelaide and used to live there actually up to recently (2006).
In 1978 became a Head of the Hot Shop there. He also began to teach part-time at the Adelaide College of the Arts and Education (19801983).
During his days in the Jam Factory Melis contributed personal development of dozens of Australian and international students in glass and helped to educate some members of strong generation of those who created a conception of modern Australian glass (Robert Knottenbelt, and Scott Chaseling among others)
After his health difficulties he had to re-locate to the field of lampworking and he is one of the world recognized masters in the technology of that field.
